Research Projects

Dr Nguan is interested in a variety of research topics, primarily based in two domains: Transplantation and Technology.

Transplant Related Research

Along with primary collaborator, Dr. Caigan Du in the Jack Bell Research Center, Dr Nguan works to develop methods to improve donor organ preservation strategies throughout the process chain in transplantation.

Donor Organs, whether from Living Donors or Deceased, once removed from the donor body must be rinsed free of intra-organ blood to prevent clot formation and replaced with preservation solution to prevent cellular damage from freezing, starvation, rewarming and reperfusion.

The more marginal the donor, the more marginal the kidney quality, and the more important it is to maintain the donor organ integrity before, during and after implantation.   To this end, we have established experimental models of kidney ischemia and transplantation in the lab, and and have made significant headway in identifying potential additives and substitutions to current preservation solutions to the point where a novel organ preservation solution is now being considered for development.
